In a volume entirely dedicated to the notion of prestige, this article distinguishes itself by an attitude that is more critical than enthusiastic vis-à-vis the theme. This article questions the manner in which archaeology envisions social differentiation and power through the material manifestation of individual prestige, often considered to be the unique and necessary condition for thinking out the emergence of social inequalities. This interpretive framework of prestige presumes a paradigm of personified power, limiting the conditions of intelligibility to a handful of canonical cases and rendering problematic the exploration of limit cases in which the collusion of prestige and power do not appear to offer the keys for understanding forms of social differentiation. The Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) in the Levant is one of these limit cases. The absence of traditional signs of prestige clashes with architectural production which expresses social authority and conspicuous practices of power. How can one go beyond this apparent contradiction between the invisibility of prestige and the ostentation of power? A detour through another case, that of the Pueblos of the American Southwest, may be illuminating. A long history of controversies around an analogous situation has, more than elsewhere, permitted critical decentering.
