Comment définir son devoir ? Les enseignements du plan suivi par Panétius dans son Peri kathêkontos

Résumé : Cicero wrote his De officiis using the tripartite structure of the Panaetian Peri kathêkontos. This structure is nonetheless very puzzling, since duty (kathêkon) is first studied from the kalon point of view, then from the sympheron, confronting then the one with the other. The bemusement arises when one considers that kalon and sympheron are one and the same thing, if Zeno and Chrysippus are to be taken seriously. Do we have to conclude that this structure is an absurd one ? Our hypothesis will be the following : Panaetius intends to solve the problem inherent to the definition of duty, that is to say, its lack of determination, when it comes to act ; he traces the duty back to its absolute spring, that is virtue, which is as kalon as sympheron.
