This article demonstrates that records from state or colonial archives can be read against the grain, bringing to light the manifold practices of everyday resistance of marginalised and subaltern groups in the course of consolidating and centralising state power between the 18th and 19th centuries in Nepal. It focused on the Tharu who live in the lowland and jungle frontier where the border between Nepal and colonial India has gradually been drawn.

Cet article démontre que les documents provenant des archives étatiques ou coloniales peuvent être lus à contre-courant, mettant en lumière les multiples pratiques de résistance quotidienne des groupes marginalisés et subalternes dans le cadre de la consolidation et de la centralisation du pouvoir de l'État népalais entre les 18e et 19e siècles. Il s'intéresse aux Tharu qui vivent dans les basses terres sauvages, là où la frontière entre le Népal et l'Inde coloniale a été progressivement tracée
