Jouir ailleurs et autrement : Du spasme végétal à l’oreiller psychopompe

Abstract : Taking as its point of departure the status accorded to sexual orgasm in Western societies, this article seeks to take a step back from modern “orgasmolatry” and its critique. By considering the choices effected in other cultural worlds, and making room for both the conceptions of the Indians of Amazonia and the latest Japanese sex toys or the debates surrounding cybersex, it envisages new interpretative approaches to a topic that has already spawned an abundant literature. The aim is to open avenues for reflection on the varied status accorded to the experience of orgasm: what should we take this to mean exactly, and is it always envisaged in the forms familiar to us? When we choose to cultivate it as a sensitive moment in the relation between living beings, what types of socio-cosmological connections are then developed?
