Au-delà des miroirs ou de l'autre côté : le Charles VII de Jean Juvénal des Ursins

Abstract : During Charles VII's reign the number of political specula tended to decrease; many authors however continued to offer to the king a mirror in which he could see what action he had to take in such troubled times. Writings produced by Jean Juvénal des Ursins on different occasions convey a double image of kingship. On the one hand, an idealised kingship that carried out the « poesté modérée » (moderate power) advocated by many clerical reformers ; on the other hand, a darker picture, one that reflected a hesitant, careless and passive man who was not really king. This dark side of the mirror aimed to urge the king to do his duty according to the old Carolingian tradition, but without undermining the majesty of the monarch.
