"Life" "Drafts": Towards Two Non-Dogmatic Poetic Archives

Abstract : In Lyn Hejinian’s My Life and in Rachel Blau DuPlessis’s Drafts, the long poem results from the attempt to generate a re-definition of our relation to the world under the sign of astonishment and of memory. Conceiving of memory in terms of fragmentation, incompleteness, unreliability produces book-long poems whose complex structures attempt to approximate its functioning, the systems of mnemotechnics and the stochastic behavior of free association and forgetting. The article purports that as an archive, an autobiography, and/or an exploratory complex, the poem works like memory itself, a proponent of provisional anti-dogmatic statements to survive in the present.
