Evergétisme et pratiques financières dans les cités de la Grèce hellénistique

Abstract : Euergetism, as experienced in the cities of the hellenistic period, has been largely analysed in sociological (P. Veyne) or institutional terms (P. Veyne), but its economic mechanisms have never been studied in depth with a few noticeable exceptions (G. J. Oliver). The aim of the article is therefore to study the financial dimension of euergetistic behaviours, and especially the relationship between euergesiai and loans, as gifts were far from being the only method of what should be considered as a specific form of investment. Euergetistic behaviours consist in a transaction, which explains why one finally appeals to D. North’s neo-institutional theory to show the economic rationality that lies behind them.
