Une réussite sans égal : analyse compositionnelle du russe UDAT'SJA « réussir »

Abstract : The Russian translation of “ My cake was a great success “ (Fr. “J’ai réussi mon gâteau”) is Tort mne (or ‘u menja’) udalsja”, which reads litteraly « My cake gave itself to me ». The verb DAT' “to give” combines with the pronominal postfix -SJA and the prefix U- (“out” in “to go out”) in a puzzling manner : there is no non-postfixed *UDAT', nor does exist any similar way of combining U- and -SJA. This paper aims at outlining a compositionnal analysis of UDAT'SJA “be a success”. Every component of the verb UDAT'SJA must be scrutinized for its ability to combine with the others. As it turns out, dat’ cannot be described as a mere “verb of possession” and U- makes impossible the passive reading of pronominalization.
