Quelques aspects de commencer

Abstract : The point of this paper is to argue for the relevance of the paradoxical notion of "partial existence" (as in English "a commencement of proof") in order to study the linguistic properties of the verb "commencer". Our approach thus radically differenciates itself from the widespread practice, which consists in referring the different uses of this verb to its putative prototypic auxiliairy function. Our aim is to highlight its multi-level variation and bring out the regular principles that goverrn this variation within the framework of A. Culioli's Theory of Predicative and Enunciative Operations.
