La norme d’externalité en matière d’explication des sanctions distribuées en milieu organisationnel: compléments sur le Locus of Distribution

Abstract : It is usually observed, as well in LOC or in attribution, a positive valuation of internal explanations. However, some data seem to show that this positive valuation is not systematic. The present research consists of two studies situated in this second perspective. In the first study, 172 senior managers answered a questionnaire evocating sanctions that a team's chief may adopt towards his subordinates. Each item was followed by three possible explanations of the sanction: attribution to the subordinates, to team's chief who sanctions, or to independent reasons both to the subordinates and to the team’s chief. Participants had to indicate the reason that team's chief should put forward if he wants: either to be appreciated by his senior manager, either to increase his team's efficiency, either to improve his team's ambiance. In the second study, 82 team’s chiefs answered to the same questionnaire, but they had to choose the attribution allowing them to give to their senior manager, either a good image of themselves, either a bad image. It is observed that to be appreciate by their senior manager, team's chiefs must declare oneself external. One also notes that team's chiefs are conscious of these preferences, with notably, in over-normative order, less auto-attributives than hetero-attributives answers. Finally, one observes a differentiation of the valuation depending on whether the objective is to increase team's efficiency, to improve team’s ambiance or to give a good image of oneself.
