Mapping Parameters of Meaning in Words and Pictures: a Comparative Study of Words and Figurative Paintings’ Spatio-temporal Qualities and their Impact on Meaning Construction
Résumé
This interdisciplinary study originates in the cross-examination of the respective spatiotemporal properties of words and images. It aims to compare each representational mode according to its form and structure and focuses on their basic distinctive features, i.e. linearity on the one hand, and two-dimensionality on the other. It also takes into account the fact that linguistic emissions are dynamic, they naturally unfold as meaning is conveyed, whereas images, and figurative paintings in particular, are generally comprehended as fixed holistic renditions of a given reality.
