Faire système du monde. Défis et apories d’une cosmologie copernicienne dans l’œuvre de Galilée

Abstract : Galileo did not only help to destroy ancient cosmology. In remaining attached to the idea of a cosmic order but aware that it is perhaps partially inaccessible to human intelligence, he proposes in his “Letter to Ingoli” and in the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems the lineaments of a positive Copernican cosmology, the principles of which are dialectically revealed and expounded with caution. This article attempts to describe the theoretical context of the Galilean cosmological enterprise, at once anti-Aristotelian and anti-Keplerian, and highlights the heuristic principles that govern its elaboration: principles of analogy, of limitation and locality, of stability, and of empiricism.
