L’aurochs de Pontvallain (Sarthe, France) : complément d’analyse ostéomorphométrique

Abstract : The aurochs skeleton (Bos primigenius Bojanus, 1827) of Pontvallain (Sarthe, France) exhibited in the Musée Vert of Le Mans has been first published in 1947. In 2004, some new bone remains belonging to the same animal have been dug out. In this work, osteomorphometric data are completed by the conventional mensurations used in archaeozoology. The values are compared with three specimens of the literature (Torsac, Etival and Danish) and with three unpublished specimens coming from the Dobrée Museum collections (Nantes). This male of about 9 years old, is 161 cm estimated withers height. It presents impressive horns with notably a horncore basale circumference of 38.5 cm which put it among the biggest individuals of the species.
