Traduction et défamiliarisation créatrice chez l'auteur-traducteur : Aragon et le souci de l'étranger

A poly-translator, Aragon developed a relationship with the foreign that is worthy of study in its own right, but also because of the richness of the interactions this activity produced with his own work. Indeed, the process of translation, which is the work of a “ferryman” designed to make certain chosen texts available to all, also provides him as writer with the opportunity to change perspective. Constituting at once an exercise in defamiliarization and an ideal of hybridization, the encounter between the translator and the foreign text leads to a creative destabilization and decentring, and helps feed the thought and writing of Aragon the author. This preoccupation with the foreign, which throughout his life was a distinctive feature of both the man and the writer, is characterized by the essential interconnectedness of ethical and aesthetic concerns. We can thus assert that his translation activity, however episodic and eclectic it may have been, clearly helped Aragon to conduct a genuine critical re-examination of his mother tongue while at the same time providing him with the foundations for experimenting creatively with the boundaries of that tongue’s malleability.

Poly-traducteur, Aragon a noué un rapport à l’étranger qui mérité d’être étudié pour lui-même mais aussi dans toute la richesse de ses interactions avec son oeuvre. Activité de passeur visant à mettre certains textes élus à la portée de tous, le processus de la traduction est en effet aussi pour lui en tant qu’écrivain l’occasion d’un changement de perspective. À la fois expérience de défamiliarisation et rêve d’hybridation, la confrontation du traducteur avec le texte étranger conduit à un ébranlement et un décentrement créateurs et contribue à alimenter la réflexion et l’écriture de l’auteur. Dans le souci de l’étranger qui aura toute sa vie été le propre de l’homme et de l’écrivain Aragon, préoccupation éthique et enjeux esthétiques sont donc indissociables. On peut ainsi affirmer que son activité de traducteur, pour épisodique et éclectique qu’elle ait été, l’aura manifestement aidé à opérer un véritable retour critique sur sa langue maternelle tout en lui fournissant les bases d’une expérimentation créatrice sur les limites de sa plasticité.
