Chimères nanobiotechnologiques et post-humanité : Promesses et prophéties dans les controverses autour des nanosciences et des nanotechnologies

Abstract : Every scientific and technological proposal involves visions of the future. Giving rise to all kinds of judgments and critical evaluations, these visions may be based on different regimes of belief, leading from technological promises to prophecies of happiness or unhappiness, through forms of anticipation or foresight, or even through science fiction narratives. Like other areas, such as nuclear energy, climate change or biotechnology, nanosciences and nanotechnologies (NST) have resulted, since the early 2000s, in a proliferation of more or less fancy representations of the future. Analyzing a large set of visions of the future has led us to conduct four types of operations. First, we mapped, using semantic tools, the whole list of objects of contention and controversy. A second level of investigation has concerned the specific scenes or arenas of debate or criticism, in order to take seriously the production of narratives and arguments in context, as close as possible to the actors who support them. A third level was focused on constraints engaged by each vision of the future once one considers that it must provide a minimum of performativity. Finally, we examined in detail the nature of the connections or disconnections that have occurred between different projects or programs, as research in nanomedicine, risk regulation and nanotoxicology, ethical issues facing the multiplication of hybrid entities and invasive technologies, the projects of improving human performance, with a particular focus on the relationships between sports and technology, transhumanism and, last but not least, the radical critique of the so-called "nanoworld".
